KARTAGENER’S SYNDROME is characterized by the triad of situs inversus, chronic sinusitis, and bronchiectasis. The cilia throughout the body is paralyzed or immobile. Cilia is needed for clearing mucus from the lung, and the dysfunction causes increased lung infections and a constant pneumonia-like state. Part of the triad, situs inversus, is an uncommon congenital condition in which the heart and other organs of the body are reversed or mirrored from their normal positions. Situs inversus is found in about 0.01% of the population. Kartagener’s Syndrome is found in even less than that.
A chronic disease is literally a never ending natural disaster of the body and often leaves people in a state of dread, fear and hopelessness. And for me, it brought additional and unwanted emotional shame. I see my work existing in the spaces between science, art, stigma and disease. All my life it was a flaw and heavy mental burden. I wanted to change my hopeless view and to expose it at the ultimate level, such as this art show, since I’ve kept it a secret most of my life. At some point in our lives, we all become patients and need to accept the progression our body takes towards non-existence. In the end, despite tangled inversus being a personal project for my own self-awareness and self-satisfaction, I hope this exhibit has the potential to speak to everyone.
